FLAMENCO SINGING AND DANCING. Recent paintings

Fúcares Gallery is pleased to announce a solo exhibition by the artist Ignacio Tovar (Castilleja de la Cuesta, Seville, 1947) in its space in Madrid with a wide collection of paintings and drawings in different formats, grouped under the suggestive title FLAMENCO SINGING AND DANCING.

Ignacio Tovar has developed a long career which started in Seville in the 70s and has continued, with a career spanning over thirty years, with FLAMENCO, a generic denomination of the series initiated in 2004 and which he is still developing.

The paintings we can see in FLAMENCO SINGING AND DANCING have been created by Tovar in the last twelve months, there being some differences between these canvasses and his former ones. In the current show, the meaning of his painting is more defined, uniform and crystallised than in previous series; there are more harmonic nuances, and the vibrations marking the different rhythms and giving coherence to the final result are more noticeably controlled. The lines of movement defining his painting are presented a priori from a more premeditated approach, and the artist manages to leave little to chance. In former series, more unforeseeable elements and random solutions could be successively noticed with the development of the painting itself — unexpected changes that served to add tensions or richness to the design once the primordial trends determining composition were defined.

His premeditation now allows for a higher return on the conceptual process, since the paintings are developed much in advance, and they establish a more ambitious scheme enabling him to mould them better and with a more leisurely mind-set. In Tovar’s recent works, his characteristic meanders of former times have disappeared, and convolution has been shaped and defined with less tension, but a greater richness of colour. The artist has simplified shapes, but has established a complexity of contents, which have increased their chromatic values, enriching and condensing the painting with the traces of time and an added depth. Ignacio Tovar’s art, unconcerned with appearance, avoids decorative results; what concerns this artist has more to do with the process and with an unhurried study of painting.
