GONÇALO PENA

Fúcares Gallery in Almagro is proud to present the first solo show in Spain by Portuguese artist GONÇALO PENA (Lisbon, 1967).

Painting is the main poetical medium of Gonçalo Pena, developing firstly his own way of historical painting and, on the other hand, a project of updating historical and pictorial tools, starting from an ambitious process of collage and juxtaposition of different traditions.

From these expositions and with a fine and complex way of working, the plastic and iconographic results seem to lead us to something surrealistic. 

Their inner world and the fascination that these paintings can produce on us is a direct consequence of the difficulty to label them starting from the historical referencies that looked for strategies of representation and at the same time for the lack of paths concerning subjects and thematic program.

The works by Gonçalo Pena, probably one of the most interesting contemporary Portuguese painters are shownfor the first time in Spain, with a appearance of unity based on nature, flirting between the Italian tradition and the English romanticism. 

These works are “on their time”, but they don’t refuse their Iberian roots, and they know perfectly the rise of a new interest in painting among some European groups of critics.
