Azucena Vieites

Fucares Gallery is proud to present the individual exhibition in Madrid by the artist Azucena Vieites (Hernani, 1967).

Azucena Vieites has been developing drawing from its technical and ideological side, turning it into an agile, direct, accessible means of expression - into a way to reflect on and get to know the environment that surrounds her. Drawing enables a representation of contemporary culture from approaches that question the logic of formal narrative, and bring about a multiplicity of images. These approaches make room for several strata of meaning that coexist and make up a visual fabric by way of a new blend – a musical remix.

The point is to represent a sort of aesthetic-political memory related to a specific time and to an experience of passage through all of it - a memory whose intensity will gradually blur. This is why the representation incorporates a certain idea of translation, as it implies the contextualization effort needed to contribute to an understanding of current times.

“Collages”, the title of the display presented on this occasion at Fúcares Gallery in Madrid, alludes to a work that revolves around that idea of collage, in the sense that it extracts fragments of reality through a process opened to knowledge.

The zine or femzine, feminist fanzine, proves an essential reference when developing one’s work following the genealogy that characterises this medium of expression. Said publications, issued in an independent – as opposed to a commercial – fashion, are created with modest, accessible resources in the context of a DIY culture, and have their origins in other political, social or artistic movements such as Dadaism, Punk, or liberation feminist movements. This medium of expression is used by very heterogeneous groups and enables the documentation and production of the representation itself, as well as a connection to other people with common interests in more minority and inaccessible fields, and the creation of networks and social fabric.
